Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show that the average gender pay gap is 17.2%. In order to close this gap, women would have to work an extra 63 days after the end of the financial year to match what men earn.
Equal Pay Day on 1 September 2011 marks the date on which women’s annual earnings reach the same as men’s. Nareen Young, Diversity Council Australia’s CEO, questioned why pay equity still eludes women and insisted that doing nothing is not an acceptable option.
