2006 Conference

DCA held its Annual Conference on Diversity on 26 October 2006 at the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre. Titled ‘Diversity in Australia’s new work environment’ and sponsored by Gilbert + Tobin, the conference was especially relevant in today’s employment relations landscape and was a great forum for practical insights into diversity in the workplace.

Internationally recognised diversity leaders, influential academics, employers of choice and experienced DCA staff spoke on key diversity topics. Facilitated by Journalist, Author and former rugby star Peter FitzSimons* , key topics and speakers included:

  • Delivering equality? Women’s pay and employment conditions in the UK: Helen Wilkinson, writer, broadcaster and Director of Genderquake Limited and My Heroines
  • Panel discussion: Rhetoric versus reality – Diversity and employment relations: Panellists from Gilbert + Tobin, Unions NSW, The University of Sydney
  • Challenging discrimination against same sex couples at work: Graeme Innes AM, Human Rights Commissioner and Commissioner Responsible for Disability Discrimination
  • Depression and work – Increasing awareness, focusing on solutions: Professor Gordon Parker, Executive Director of Black Dog Institute and Matthew Johnstone, author
  • Beyond Corporate Social Responsibility – Aboriginal employment for business success: Carlo Svagelli, Senior Consultant, Diversity Council Australia
  • Striking the balance – Women, men, family and work: Pru Goward, Federal Sex Discrimination Commissioner and Commissioner Responsible for Age Discrimination
  • Breakout sessions on 'Faith in the workplace', 'Combating the skills shortage: Employing people with disability' and 'Grey Matters – Engaging and retaining the mature age workforce'.
  • PLUS a networking cocktail party to meet other diversity practitioners.
