Religion: is respect simply a matter of good faith?
Lisa Annese, DCA’s Acting Research Director, writes about the balance between respect for faith/culture and human rights at work.
Australia, as a great multicultural country, prides itself on being a nation of tolerance and acceptance, even if the smack of sincerity resonates only a tingle from the recently fought election battle on the issue of boat people. For all the disguise and rhetoric about ‘protecting borders’, ‘protecting jobs’ and ‘getting rid of illegal people smugglers’, one could not help but feel a little cynical that there was just a tad of xenophobia in the air. Of course this was not helped by media-generated hysteria and hype. So how, as decent people, do we find the truth amongst the stories generated by fear?
