State of play in Australia

The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports the following on work and the Australian family:

  • More mothers with children under 15 were employed in March 2008 than at any time in the last decade; 63% were employed in March 2008, compared with 54% ten years earlier; 60% of these mothers worked part time.
  • Nearly two-thirds (64%) of parents with children under 15 reported that they 'always or often' felt rushed or pressed for time.
  • Employed mature-age workers indicated their top two ideal employment practices approaching retirement would involve: flexibility in start and finish times, and phased retirement.

What does this mean for organisations?

The business benefits for flexible working arrangements to accommodate family responsibilities and other employees’ commitments outside work have been very well documented by both government and by leading practice employers.

Flexible workplace arrangements can assist employers and employees improve the way the workplace operates. Creating a flexible workplace is good for business and has a number of advantages.
