DCA Research Committee

DCA’s Research Committee is an external group that oversees DCA’s research.

Members include leading academics and researchers with a knowledge of diversity and inclusion theory and practice.

The Committee meets approximately four times a year to provide strategic direction to DCA’s Research function.

DCA's Research Committee assists DCA deliver on its research vision to work in partnership with members to generate ground breaking diversity research that enables Australian organisations to fully leverage the benefits of diversity and inclusion.

Committee members provide expert guidance to DCA about our direction and collaborations with industry.

More specifically, this involves:

  • Reviewing DCA research vision, research priorities and research projects
  • Identifying ‘ahead of the curve’ research topics and emerging issues for possible future research projects
  • Assisting in identifying appropriate research partnership and sponsorship opportunities

Abbie Wright

Abbie Wright is Aurecon's Diversity and Inclusion Manager and DCA Board Director.  Abbie is a long-standing employee and valued advisor on diversity and inclusion matters. With a background in human capital, cultural change and leadership development, Abbie's approach to diversity and inclusion is to "bring others on the journey" by influencing a work environment where everyone can feel safe, valued and accepted regardless of difference.  Abbie leads and delivers a diversity portfolio that supports Aurecon's business strategy and respects client and staff expectations, including Employer of Choice targets. Abbie is a member of the Aurecon Australia and New Zealand leadership team and a qualified executive coach.

Abbie was integral to Aurecon’s Christchurch earthquake response team as Family Liaison Officer and is the 2014 Australian Human Resources Institute (AHRI) Diversity Champion award recipient.  In 2015 Abbie was part of the leadership team that led Aurecon’s AHRI award-winning mental health programme, Mind Matters, as well as positioned Aurecon as a runner-up for the AHRI gender equality award. 

Abbie has influenced cultural change in Aurecon that has seen the implementation of Aurecon’s Reconciliation Action and Indigenous Procurement Plans, as well as Aurecon Pride for LGBTI inclusion – placing Aurecon in the top 30 for inclusive organisations as measured by Pride in Diversity’s annual index.  With significant support from the leadership team, Abbie introduced all positions flex into Aurecon in 2016 under the Yes Flex initiative and delivers Ascend, Aurecon’s leadership advancement programme for high potential women. 

Abbie is driving a focus on inclusive leadership within Aurecon, including supporting the integration of attributes that will enable leaders to lead inclusively through their behaviours and language.

 

Dr Graeme Russell

Graeme has worked extensively in a range of organisations over the past 25 years (e.g.  ABC, ADF, AGL, Alcoa, AMP, ANZ, APN NZ Media, ATKearney, Australian Super, BHP Iron Ore, Boral,  Boston Consulting Group, Brookfield Multiplex, Caltex, Campbell Arnotts, Chevron, Colgate-Palmolive, Commonwealth Bank, Freehills, Graincorp, IAG, IBM, Johnson & Johnson, KPMG, Leighton Holdings, Lend Lease, Mallesons, Merck Sharp & Dohme, NAB, Nestle, Origin Energy, PwC, SAP, Shell International, Unilever, Singapore Government, Westpac), and in different countries (e.g. Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, China, United States, Japan, Korea, United Kingdom, The Netherlands). He is a regular presenter to Australian and Global Conferences on gender, flexibility and diversity (most recently at a conference in Sweden in May 2013). Graeme has recently conducted research and written reports on Work/Life and Flexibility in China, Japan and Korea for Multinational Enterprises.  He has also conducted major workforce, cultural diversity and flexibility projects with DCA – Get Flexible! and Men Get Flexible!

He was a member of Implementation Advisory Group for the Workplace Gender Equality Act, and has conducted numerous projects for the WGEA (and the previous EOWA), the most recent of which was the design of a Gender Target setting tool.   He was previously a Board Member of DCA.

 

Dr Jacqui Abbott

Jacqui has worked across a broad range of industries in corporate roles, as a coach and consultant covering: professional services; energy; resources; aged care; transport; manufacturing; mining; health; technology; banking; retail and education. Jacqui has held corporate roles at: Allens; Arthur Andersen; Orica; Ernst & Young, Grant Thornton, Newcrest Mining, NBN; Shell Australia and the Ford Motor Company and was a board member of Diversity Council Australia from 2013-2016. Passionate about mainstreaming of flexibility within organisations and pursuing more flexible career paths, flexibility in organisations was a major focus of Jacqui’s PhD.

 

Dr Raymond Trau 

Raymond Trau is a lecturer in the School of Management at RMIT University. His research focuses on stigma and stigmatisation (particularly LGBTI related issues) in the workplace, workplace diversity, mentoring, and corporate social responsibility.  He is currently collaborating with researchers from Australia, Singapore, the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada. Raymond’s research has been published in a number of international journals such as Human Resource Management and British Journal of Management. Additionally, the Financial Times (in London), The Australian, HR Monthly, ABC News and ABC Radio have interviewed or mentioned his research.  

Raymond holds a PhD from Monash University. Prior to joining RMIT, Raymond worked as a research fellow at University of Queensland, University of Sydney, University of Western Australia and Curtin University focusing on diversity and social impact research projects.  In 2010 and 2011, Raymond served as an academic/research advisor for Pride in Diversity and participated in the development of the first Australian Workplace Equality Index (AWEI).  

In his spare time, Raymond enjoys cooking, wines and travelling to other parts of the world (he has travelled to 24 countries so far). He hopes that his regular travels in Asia will improve his Vietnamese (a language that he is most fluent in), Cantonese (his mother tongue) and Mandarin. 

 

Dr Dimitria Groutsis

Dr Dimitria Groutsis is the Program Director of the Dalyell Scholars Stream and Senior Lecturer in the Discipline of Work and Organisational Studies at the University of Sydney Business School.

Dimitria is a leading scholar in the field of migration, labour mobility and cultural diversity in the business context. Her work has appeared in leading national and international peer review journals, book chapters and she has co-edited and co-authored several books. Her consulting role sees her working with the Diversity Council Australia, the Australian Human Rights Commission, the Australian Institute of Company Directors, large corporate sector partners and key stakeholders in the government and non-government sectors. Dr Groutsis has received a number of competitive external research grants, with total funding in excess of 1.5 million dollars. Along with Professors Collins and Reid, she is the recipient of an ARC Linkage grant, examining Syrian-Conflict refugees: settlement, employment and education outcomes.

She currently serves as the Associate Editor of the European Journal of Management, and is an Advisory board member of the Journal of Immigrant and Refugee Studies. She has served on the advisory board of the Diversity Council of Australia (DCA), consulting on their cultural diversity in leadership project and is on the DCA’s Research Committee. She has also been working closely with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) on preserving a large migration archive.

Dimitria is the Convenor of the Migrants@Work Research Group at the University of Sydney Business School. Established in 2011, the Research Group provides an important platform for researchers and policy makers to present, discuss and debate research on migration and diversity management in the business context, bringing together a broad audience including: academics, the business community, and representatives from government.
