Who is DCA's 1000th member ...?

Topics Inclusion

In early 2022, DCA welcomed our 1000th member!

DCA's ever-increasing numbers make it clear that D&I is one of the single most important ways to attract and retain talent as we move ahead in the post-pandemic world of work.

Our 1000th member, HoMie, is a not-for-profit supporting young people.

To mark the milestone, we meet them below.

Who are HoMie and what do you do?

HoMie is a not-for-profit streetwear label that uses 100% of its profits from sales to support young people experiencing homelessness or hardship. This is done through our 2 core programs, our “Pathway Alliance Program”, an 8-month paid retail and education internship, and our VIP days, where we close the store to the general public and invite young people in the community to shop in our flagship store for free.

 Why did you join DCA?

We joined DCA to help guide our D&I policies and procedures, and to ensure that we continue to hold ourselves accountable to building a safe and inclusive space for people of all diverse backgrounds.

Why is inclusion important to your business?

Inclusion is important to HoMie because a large percentage of our cohort come from a range of diverse backgrounds. It’s important for us to recognise the challenges and barriers that different diverse groups face, in order to provide them with support that recognises these challenges through a holistic lens. Creating programs that are accessible and responsive to diverse needs ensure that HoMie continues to create welcoming environments that everyone can access.

Why is inclusion important in your wider industry?

Inclusion in the community sector is important as it ensures that all people, regardless of race, gender expression, sexuality, beliefs, disabilities, or life experiences, all have the best opportunities to succeed in society. Equal opportunity and the ability to participate in society, free from discrimination and disadvantage, is a basic human right that our industry aims to achieve.

Here’s what clients say about HoMie:

"Honestly, it's like family. It's so inclusive and positive. Spending time with the homie team has been really beneficial and I can't think of anything I would change.” - Pathway Alliance Intern 2021

"The most valued part of the VIP Day was having diverse staff and volunteers!! SO important and amazing to see. Having hairdressers in store that had worked on culturally diverse clients was so amazing! Young people were walking away with a whole new level of confidence, literally dancing at the event! We had one young person say that they had always wanted to try that haircut but never had the confidence to try it, this event allowed them to feel safe and confident to give it a try." - STREAT (Community service partner)
