Diversity Leadership Program - How business can improve disability confidence

25 May 2017

DCA’s Diversity Leadership Program always seek to provide the latest in leading practice in workplace diversity. Our May event looks at how to improve accessibility and inclusion with a focus on Australian Network on Disability Access and Inclusion Index.

Approximately 20% of the Australian population has one or more disability, while a similar percentage of most organisations’ customers and clients are also likely to have one or more disability. Studies have shown that people with disability often surpass their counterparts without disability in terms of loyalty and productivity in the workplace. Our economy and community has so much to gain from the greater workforce participation of people with disability and yet levels are currently around 30 percentage points lower than for other Australians. So how can organisations change this picture?

Employers who are successfully addressing access and inclusion are considering the needs of people with disability in all areas of their operations. This means ensuring that people with disability have equal access to employment, training and development, products and services, premises, communication and information communication technology.

Samantha Dancey, Senior Relationship Manager from Australian Network on Disability (AND), will outline how the new Access and Inclusion Index offers a suite of online tools for Australian organisations to use, understand, assess, benchmark and improve their disability confidence to meet the needs of customers and employees with disability.

Joining Samantha for a panel discussion, will be Sam Turner, Head of Inclusion & Diversity Westpac Group and Darren Fittler, Partner, Gilbert + Tobin to discuss various issues around accessibility including how to:

  • Connect people with disability to business
  • Recruit people with a disability with greater confidence
  • Navigate communication technology and service providers
