The Directors of Diversity Council Australia are delighted to announce that retired Lieutenant General David Morrison AO will be appointed as the new Chair of the DCA Board.
DCA’s Acting Chair, Sam Mostyn, said David’s appointment heralds a new chapter for DCA as it celebrates its 30th anniversary.
“David is well known for his work to change the culture of the Australian Army towards greater diversity and inclusiveness, especially in the areas of gender equality, cultural diversity and LGBTI-inclusion. His obvious passion for diversity combined with his power to influence will enhance DCA’s engagement with business leaders – as well as elevate its vital work to create more diverse, inclusive and productive workplaces. I could not think of a better way to start the next 30 years for DCA,” said Sam.
David Morrison served as an officer in the Australian Army for over 36 years, retiring in May 2015. His final appointment was as Chief of Army, a position he held for four years. During his military career he saw operational service in Bougainville and East Timor and held a broad range of leadership and management positions. He was appointed as an Officer in the Order of Australia in 2010.
During his tenure as the Chief of Army, David took a strong public stand on matters of military culture especially those related to increasing gender and cultural diversity in the Army. He is committed to improving the opportunities for men and women to reach their potential through developing a greater appreciation of the benefits of more inclusive and diverse societies. Since 2013, he has been a member of the Male Champions of Change, a group of male leaders advocating for and acting to advance gender equality.
David’s appointment will progress the work of current DCA CEO Lisa Annese and her team, improving capability in diversity for Australian businesses. David said he is honoured to take on the role, effective immediately.
“I was honoured to be asked to join the Board and to contribute to the work done by Diversity Council Australia. Over the last 30 years it has made a significant contribution to enhancing the richness of our Australian society. I am grateful for the opportunity, and I look forward to working with the very talented and dedicated team who form the Board and the executive of DCA,” said David.
Sam thanked the CEO of the Retail Council, Anna McPhee, who was Chair of the Board from 2010 until she stepped down in June 2015.
“Anna has done an outstanding job during this time, enhancing her already strong track record of advancing the benefits of diversity to business and the wider economy. We’re delighted that Anna will remain on the Board and continue to make a valuable contribution,” added Sam.
