Diversity Council Australia congratulates Chair of its Board, Lieutenant General (retired) David Morrison AO, for being awarded the prestigious title of 2016 Australian of the Year.
The Australian of the Year Awards recognise the achievements of eminent Australians who have contributed significantly to improving the lives of their communities, their state and our country.
During his tenure as the Chief of Army, David took a strong public stand on matters of military culture, especially those related to increasing gender diversity and LGBTI-inclusion in the Army. He was appointed as an Officer in the Order of Australia in 2010 and since 2013 has been a member of the Male Champions of Change, a group of male leaders advocating for and acting to advance gender equality.
Since his retirement from the Australian Army, David has remained committed to realising a more egalitarian society and was appointed as Chair of the DCA Board in September 2015.
DCA’s CEO, Lisa Annese, said the award acknowledges his outstanding contribution to diversity and inclusion and his potential to create change over the 2016 year.
“On behalf of the DCA Board, staff and its member organisations, I congratulate David for being awarded this fantastic honour.
“His dedication to confronting discrimination and zero tolerance towards harassment in the Army have been a catalyst for positive change, not only in the Defence forces but in the wider community.
“He has gained the respect and admiration of many for his unwavering commitment to realising greater equality, in particular gender equality, within Australian society.
“We should all be inspired by his determination to develop a greater appreciation of the benefits of more inclusive and diverse workplaces and communities. I hope this award will encourage others to follow his lead,” added Lisa.
