Taking an intersectional approach to gender equality

Applying intersectionality at work

AIntersectionality refers to how different aspects of a person’s identity can expose them to overlapping forms of discrimination and marginalisation. For D&I practitioners, intersectionality can be used as a tool to help us understand these experiences, and make sure our diversity and inclusion (D&I) initiatives are truly inclusive.

At this event, Dr Virginia Mapedzahama (she/her) PhD, Sociology and Scholar in Residence and Director, Special Projects at Diversity Council Australia. Virginia also leads the RISE Project at DCA.  Virginia is an accomplished academic and researcher specialising in racial equity, intersectionality, gender, migration and workplace diversity. Her work combines critical race theory, Black feminist thought, and migration studies to advance social justice in Australian workplaces. 

Virginia presented on the new resources developed by DCA to help us better understand concepts of intersectionality, power, and marginalisation, and how this can be practically applied to enhance gender equality initiatives in workplaces.
