According to the Australian Human Rights Commission’s Time for respect: Fifth national survey on sexual harassment in Australian workplaces:
- 77% of Australians aged 15 or older have experienced sexual harassment at some point in their lives (89% of women, and 64% of men).
- 1 in 5 people had been sexually harassed at work in the 12 months preceding the survey.
- 1 in 3 people had been sexually harassed at work in the 5 years preceding the survey.
Sexual harassment has been unlawful in Australian workplaces since 1984 and so for well over three decades, employers have invested in policies, awareness-raising, and training. Despite these efforts, it remains as prevalent as ever. It occurs in every industry, in every location and at every level, in Australian workplaces.
