June is Pride Month, a time to celebrate LGBTQ+ communities, recognise the progress made, and acknowledge that there is still more work to do to achieve inclusion.
Building an inclusive workplace takes ongoing effort, visibility and action throughout the year. Recent DCA research found that LGBTIQ+ workers are still more likely to feel excluded at work, with almost half saying they faced discrimination or harassment in the past year.
Inclusion is about more than preventing harm. It is about creating workplaces where people feel welcome, supported and able to do their best work. When organisations invest in inclusive cultures and supportive leaders, they build workplaces that are safer, stronger and more effective.
One way organisations can support LGBTQ+ employees is through Employee Resource Groups (ERGs). These are voluntary, employee-led groups that help create a more diverse and inclusive workplace, while also supporting the organisation’s goals and values.
DCA Member Canva shares how the Canva Pride Collective has supported their employees globally.
Canva's Pride Collective
Canva’s Pride Collective is a vibrant community of employees across four regions – ANZ, Asia, Europe, and the USA – who volunteer their time to advocate for equality and create spaces where everyone can truly be themselves. For Canva, belonging means more than a seat at the table; Pride at Canva is about real connection, education, and allyship – for LGBTQIA+ employees, customers, and the communities around us.
And the impact goes well beyond Canva’s office walls. In Australia, Canva has been part of the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras since 2022, including funding 15 grants of $5,000 each in 2025 and 2026 to help LGBTQIA+ community organisations – like Parents for Trans Youth Equity and the Drag Kings – bring their parade entries to life. In Asia, they’ve raised ₱123,000 for PANTAY, a Philippines youth-led organisation, and marched in LOV3LABAN alongside ~100,000 people.
In Europe, Canva unveiled a Pride Collective Mural at their London HQ – created by queer artist Finn Yvo and co-painted with employees – and launched a fund to help members across EMEA attend their local Pride parades. In the U.S., they marched in the Austin Pride Parade and partnered with Maven Youth to run a Canva 101 Summer Camp for LGBTQIA+ young people in Austin and San Francisco.
At its heart, the Canva Pride Collective is built on people who show up – for one another, and for the broader LGBTQIA+ communities they’re proud to be part of.
DCA has recently launched a new Knowledge Program on Employee Resource Groups and Networks. This one-hour program is aimed at increasing the capability of ERGs & Staff Networks to drive impact in their organisations. Developed with ERG chairs and committee members, D&I practitioners, People and Capability & HR practitioners, D&I champions and employees in mind, this program examines the roles, functions and benefit of ERGs & Networks and explores how to set ERGs & Networks up for success.
