Shared parental leave: enabling more men to share care

Australia does not have a nationally legislated ‘shared parental leave’ approach and, as such, fathers are often labelled as ‘secondary carers’ – and many Australian organisations provide limited parental leave allowance for secondary carers, if any at all.

But some of the more progressive employers can offer best practice examples of parental leave policies.

At this event we heard from Associate Professor Myra Hamilton, Principal Research Fellow, University of Sydney Business School on research into parental leave and the importance of fathers sharing primary care over a longer period.

We also heard from a father who has taken parental leave and shared what his experiences of leave and returning to work have been, and our panel discussed what leading practice around parental leave policies looks like.

DCA’s Cathy Brown, Communications and Advocacy Director and rainbow parent  moderated the discussion and guest speakers included:

  1. Associate Professor Myra Hamilton, Principal Research Fellow, University of Sydney Business School
  2. Salli Hood, Director Inclusion and Diversity, Enterprise PPC Lead at KPMG,
  3. Pat Murphy, Finance Business Partner at BHP and
  4. Owain Emslie, Senior Associate at Grattan Institute.
