At this Gender Equality Network we will look at the uptake of parental leave by men, why it’s important for gender equality and how employers can make it easier for men to participate.

Australia does not have a nationally legislated 'shared parental leave' approach and, as such, fathers are often labelled as 'secondary carers' - and many Australian organisations provide limited parental leave allowance for secondary carers, if any at all.

But some of the more progressive employers can offer best practice examples of parental leave policies.

At this event we will hear from Associate Professor Myra Hamilton, Principal Research Fellow, University of Sydney Business School on research into parental leave and the importance of fathers sharing primary care over a longer period.

We will also hear from a father who has taken parental leave and will share what his experiences of leave and returning to work have been, and our panel will discuss what leading practice around parental leave policies looks like.

DCA's Cathy Brown, Communications and Advocacy Director and rainbow parent will be moderating the discussion and guest speakers will include:

  1. Associate Professor Myra Hamilton, Principal Research Fellow, University of Sydney Business School
  2. Salli Hood, Director Inclusion and Diversity, Enterprise PPC Lead at KPMG,
  3. Pat Murphy, Finance Business Partner at BHP and
  4. Owain Emslie, Senior Associate at Grattan Institute.
