Accountability in Action: Does going public improve diversity and equity?

In 2024, the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) for the first time published the gender pay gaps of private sector employers with 100 or more employees. The aim was to increase transparency, encourage conversation around gender pay gaps in Australia and accelerate change.

At this event, we heard from Mary Wooldridge (she/her), CEO of WGEA about the publication of these gaps and the impact this has had on gender equity outcomes in the workplace.

Mary addressed key questions such as:

  • what has the data revealed so far?
  • has going public helped to improve equity outcomes?
  • what new information on gender pay gaps has been reported in 2025?
  • what is being done to collect intersectional pay gap data?

This discussion was moderated by Catherine Hunter (she/her), CEO of DCA and included a panel of guest speakers who discussed progress so far and ways to accelerate change:

  1. Abbie Wright (she/her), APAC Head of Equity Diversity and Inclusion, Arup

  2. Sam Nickless (he/him), CEO, Gilbert + Tobin

  3. Virginia Mapedzahama (she/her) PhD, Scholar in Residence and Director, Special Projects, DCA

  4. Mary Wooldridge (she/her), CEO, Workplace Gender Equality Agency.
